Most insurance companies require the owner to commission a survey prior to renewing a policy once a vessel is 20 years old, and then at five yearly intervals. Check the small print! These surveys deal with issues that affect seaworthiness and insurability and are similar but a little narrower than the Pre-purchase surveys. They do not cover running rigging, sails and covers, cathodic protection, navigation systems, cosmetics, toilets, fresh water systems, refrigeration and heating.
